Sometimes Boards and Heads collide. Emotions and noise can create a non-productive working relationship. Sometimes the Board might seek to dismiss or not renew the Head but would be well advised to understand the following: 

  • leadership stability helps maintain consistent school vision and culture
  • institutional knowledge is a valuable asset
  • relationships and trust with staff, students, parents and the wider community take time to build

 

For example: The Board think...

A Board or individual(s) within it might perceive the Head as weak/failing. But in what way? Decision making... staff management... academic results... public presence... etc.

Have the Board considered whether this has been truely identified and if so, could it be:

  • addressed by professional development
  • outweighed by other strengths
  • really impacting school performance
  • or just a personal impression

Have the Board weighed up the costs (not only financial) against the potential benefits?

Have the Head and the Board examined where the conflict comes from:

  • unrealistic expectations
  • personal or political dynamic within the Board
  • communication gap between Head and Board
  • different leadership styles
  • parents complaining (this is the most common and can usually be addressed constructively)
