Mentoring with Coaching

Why use an external mentor/coach for your school leaders?

As a Head you mentor your leadership team but why might be this better done by an external consultant?

  • an excellent professional development opportunity that would be greatly appreciated
  • greater objectivity and perspective - see situations from different angles without influence from peers
  • confidential space for vunerability - a safe space where leaders can be vulnerable without fearing an effect on their professional relationships within the school
  • freedom from power dynamics - whatever we think, power structures influence and inhibit dialog
  • challenging assumption -an outsider can more easily question current practices and help the leader think critically, crucial for driving innovation and improvement
  • focus on development - this relationship is purely about the leader's professional development, not complicated by operational matters or school dynamics
